Bullshit & the backyard EP

As of yesterday, all five of our backyard EP music videos are OFFICIALLY OUT. It has been Olivia‘s dream to develop skills in video editing and production since Junestone began back in 2018. Making these videos has been invigorating, enlightening, and most of all, fun. Releasing the final “Bullshit” has never felt so great.
We recorded the backyard EP songs in August 2020, on the Brown family’s back porch. Our good friend Shawna Picard (amazing sound engineer and videographer) recorded the audio while filming us with the help of her good friend Jim. All audio that you hear is us playing live, and the video of us that you see is actual footage that was taken while we recorded. All five songs were mixed and mastered by our friend Anthony at Music First Production. He did a spectacular job! It took us longer than expected to complete, but we kept going and it came together after all. 💗

Behind the Scenes: Operate on My Heart

It truly has been a fantastic day filming the final scenes for the butt-shakin’, baby-makin’ soon-to-be autumn hit, “Operate on My Heart.” Playing not just the Hottest Nurse, but also the Best Doctor, and the Worst Patient, Olivia surely has 24+ hours of video editting ahead of her. But it’s an exciting time to be alive and Junestone is so excited to show you what’s in store.

“I really can’t believe what the f*** Anthony did with our spontaneous comp and revison of ‘Operate on My Heart’. It’s fantastic!” Olivia shakes her head between sips of cold coffee on her back deck. “It’s a good thing he asked us if we had anything for him to mix, I might have never gone back into those sessions otherwise.”

“Operate on My Heart” was originally recorded in Olivia and Ian’s (the keyboardist’s) basement back in 2019. For whatever reason the band was sure that the track was useless. It wasn’t until Olivia and Jake (the guitarist) reopened the session during quarantine 2020 that they realized otherwise. After renting a mic, rerecording the guitars, and rearranging a few of the bass, keyboard, and drum takes, a session once thought failed beyond repair was suddenly ready to be mixed by none other than Anthony Pansino.

A friend of drummer Justin McHugh’s, Anthony is a production magician to say the least. He’s also the mixing man on “Operate on my Heart”. Looking for new projects to take on, he reached out to Olivia back in May asking if there was anything she might want to collaborate on. It was then that a long-forgotten about session was suddenly back in the picture for the band.

The intial birth of “Operate on My Heart” goes back even further than 2020 and 2019 however to a weekend three years ago in 2018 when Jake and Olivia were staying in Sauble Beach. The hook popped into Olivia’s mind while lying on the actual beach, where she immediately sang it to Jake who immediately approved. Six months later in Banff, Olivia found the right bass line and charted up a rough lead sheet to bring the band. The parts they wrote from there were magical, but difficult to capture completely at their initial DIY recording session.

“Yeah the song is really just like, please help me fix my heart? Like COME ON HEART! You can do it babe. I don’t like being so afraid of other people anymore you know. I’ve got people to love with all of my heart now and I just don’t have time for it to be broken about stuff that isn’t even going on anymore, seriously.”

While the release date is still up in the air, one thing is for certain, amazingly sexy self-love songs will never die. Prepare to dance your pants off, Junestone has got one hell of an alt-disco, highly-experienced funky single in the works.

Junestone T.U Jazz Fest 2020 2

11 Reasons Why T.U. Jazz Fest is the ULTIMATE Way to Spend Labour Day

  1.  It’s a masquerade! Have you ever heard of Phantom of the Opera? Well we’re not playing music from that, but we are going to be wearing some fantastic face masks. It’s a costume party AND everyone is safety.
  2. It’s outside. Did you know that you are likely Vitamin D deficient? I hate to break it to you, but you might as well be Vitamin Deficient! Not only will you get to hear us playing some heart-healing harms, but the sun will be shining some sweet, sweet vitamins all over your vitamin-starved skin the entire time.
  3. Junestone has been practicing. 😉 Not every improviser practices am I right? Luckily for you we didn’t know we were officially a jazz band until T.U. Jazz Fest hired us! So we’ve been working hard to make sure that what you’re about to see looks easy. Luckily Olivia doesn’t actually understand how jazz works either so you may love what you hear even if you only drink coffee and jazz is not exactly your cup of tea.
  4. We will be playing the Bong Song at 4:20. I mean, you should by no means be smoking with your masks on that’s just straight up dangerous, but what better way to celebrate your day off than entering a meditative musical trance via a custom luxurious arrangement of our own original song, The Bong Song?
  5. It’s not underwater. Imagine how hard it would be to attend a concert underwater! You could run out of air and confirming your tickets at the entrance would be almost impossible, forget about securing a seat. Since we will be playing above water, you’ll be able to hear an entire song start to finish without having to leave halfway through to take a breath.
  6. It’s a Monday. Why else would the government let you have a day off if not to check out some jazz music? And even if you’re not about listening to the government, why not be a rebel about your holiday and listen to something truly controversial, me playing jazz music. It’s very cool to be culture and let me tell you our culture is being cool so come on downnnn.
  7. We have hand-made buttons for sale in support of.. recording our beautiful songs this fall! Which brings me to the next awesome reason you should come hang:
  8. We are going to test out every song that we will be recording. Yes this is correct, we will be playing an entirely soon-to-be recorded album, start to finish. Love it.
  9. This is our first show as Junestone! It would be an astounding honour to have you there at this landmark event in our baby band’s life.
  10. It’s possible that for brief moments you may feel like you actually belong in the universe, that you are a part of a bigger picture that transcends time and space, galaxies and dimensions, and that things might actually make sense in beautifully complicated ways that you simply do not need to understand to enjoy.
  11. It’s free! Not even an extreme couponer could find a better deal than this one so click this link and get your very own tix ASAP. https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/tu-jazz-fest-2020-junestone-tickets-118329160705

**Junestone does not condone guests smoking in non-smoking areas or taking their masks off to smoke in any public area where less than 2m apart things are going down.

  3. Drink some water and put some sunscreen on your stylish face.
  4. Listen to some songs you hate (minimum 75% hatred) just to remind yourself why you love the songs that you love. So get that hate outta your system and come see us babyyy!
  5. Now listen to some songs you love and get your music stomach ready for a MUSIC MEAL. If the song makes your hips shake uncontrollably it’s lik ely super effective and the perfect contender for a pre-show ditty.
